steven lee myers. and daniel byman, director of the center for peace and security studies at georgetown university. steven lee myers, let me start with you. two top administration officials say it was terrorism. one makes a direct link to an al qaeda group but how much and what exactly is known at this point about the attack in benghazi? >> well, i think administration is clearly trying to learn more. from the first day they've launched an investigation headed by the f.b.i., of course. then you have an internal review. and they've been very careful not to jump to conclusions, if you will. and that's led them to sort of change-- not change, evolve their story a little bit each day. you learn a little bit more. the question of whether or not it was a terrorist attack. initially it seemed to be more of a mob or riot that was prompted by the video that's been circulating and causing protests across the region. that now seems not to have been the case. it seems to have been a much more organized attack that was perhaps sparked by the video but not a spontaneous protest as initially said. yes

. ambassador chris stevens was killed in an assault on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. the president condemned the video, but he insisted there is no justification for mindless violence. >> given the power of faith in our lives and the passion that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression. it is more speech. the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect. >> woodruff: mr. obama also had a new warning on iran's nuclear program. yesterday iranian leader ahmadinejad repeated his claim that the program is only for peaceful purposes, an explanation the u.s. and other countries dismiss. today the president said again iran cannot be allowed to build nuclear weapons. >> let me be clear. america wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy. we believe that there is still time and space to do so. but that time is not unlimited. make no mistake, a nuclear-armed iran is not a challenge that can be contained. it would threaten the elimination of israel, t

killed chris stevens, an appalling murder of somebody who had actually done his best for the libyan people. but then you then have thousands on the street protesting against his killers and demanding action be taken. so i think the more i look at the world today, i think in a way a more relevant struggle to a lot of countries than what i would call traditional left versus right politics is the open minded versus the closed minded. and the open minded see globalizations as an opportunity. they want an open society, an open economy, a society where you tolerate and respect people, a different faiths and cultures and then the closed minded who really have a view that if you don't accept my view then are you an alien or an enemy. i think that is the battle that is going on and in the end, i think it's important always, and i always say this to people in america to realize-- realize that for all the pictures of extremist that you see in people burning the american flag and protesting and so on, you also then have a lot of people who wanted same type of society and free society that we wa
